Director’s Note

When this year’s Hawaii Shakespeare Festival season was announced, the question repeatedly asked of me was “Why Cymbeline?” The short, sassy answer was that it’s not well-known, so I could do whatever I wanted with it, and no one would have a problem (this, of course, is not true: I’m sure many folks may have a problem).

The longer, more sincere answer is that while it is one of Shakespeare’s lesser-known plays, I find beauty in that. This road less traveled has wonderful scenery that I was only too happy to explore without the pressure and expectations of his more popular pieces. Some liken The Tragedie of Cymbeline to having all of the Bard’s great works thrown into a blender on puree; for myself, there’s comfort in having these familiar tropes as landmarks in my journey with this play. Cymbeline is the last play of the First Folio, and quite frankly, is the last kid to be picked for the dodgeball team.

But this kid has a hell of an arm.

I am only too happy to tell this story with these beautiful people. The cast and crew I have assembled have brought so much joy to me during our process, and I hope they will do the same for you. This production is a love letter to all the kids picked last for dodgeball. It is a love letter to the 80s, a time of excess in uncertainty.

Finally, it is a love letter to the late Dr. Paul Cravath; I dedicate this show to his memory. I know you’re watching, Paul—thank you for everything.

Enjoy the show, friends.

—Reyn Afaga

Dedication

In his years teaching, creating, promoting and performing theater in Hawai‘i, Professor Knapp touched thousands of lives. While he tackled a wide variety of theatrical projects, it was Professor Knapp’s boundless joy for teaching and presenting Shakespeare that we hope to honor with this festival. It is our sincere wish that our affection and respect for our beloved teacher finds a voice in these productions. The Hawaii Shakespeare Festival is dedicated to Terence Knapp.
