Full Circle. Mr. Knapp is the one who urged me to go off island, gain professional experience and bring it home…and with his push and those of my mentors, I set off and began the next phase of my journey at the age of 20. I learned so much from Terry about Shakespeare, and I can only hope he’d be pleased with our story of As You Like It, countrified.
After 425 years or so, Shakespeare’s understanding of the human condition is right on the money. From deep exploration of different loves to his understanding of man’s stages of life, to understanding that “All the world’s a stage, and every man plays his part” Shakespeare makes you realize that love is a part of the human condition, and not much has changed since.
Even exploring the idea of humility and change, Shakespeare wrote AYLI as a pastoral comedy, where he takes people from the court, puts them into the fields so that they learn the simplicities in life, and when they have become better people, or are changed by the fields, he then puts them back into the court as changed individuals. During this time, women were restrained by tight social norms, and arranged marriages were the standard. AYLI explores the freedom of those restraints in the Forest of Arden, a symbol of freedom, where one can love whom they please... and a woman can disguise herself as a man.
Tonight you will witness an exploration into the human condition of love and relationships:
And as Shakespeare does, the Familial Love and all its complications are also explored: Fatherly Love, Sisterly Love, and Brotherly Love.
They say that Shakespeare’s accent was closer to the U.S. Southern accent. It’s certainly true that the Southern accent was a product of the Transatlantic speech shift, and you find as an actor that when learning a Southern accent it easily can slip into cockney or “posh.” That said we explored the Southern accent, which in turn lifts the language off the page and makes the words come alive! I hope you enjoy the playful lilt that occurs in the language.
Which love do you believe to be your true and honest love? That’s the big question of the play. Tonight, discover the aspects of love in which you connect and identify with, because it is as you like it.

In his years teaching, creating, promoting and performing theater in Hawai‘i, Professor Knapp touched thousands of lives. While he tackled a wide variety of theatrical projects, it was Professor Knapp’s boundless joy for teaching and presenting Shakespeare that we hope to honor with this festival. It is our sincere wish that our affection and respect for our beloved teacher finds a voice in these productions. The Hawaii Shakespeare Festival is dedicated to Terence Knapp.
